| Acne vulgaris (pimples) is usually treated by drug therapy such as antibiotics, Ro accutane or hormones. However surgery is helpful in speedy resolution of acne lesions. Acne nodules can be treated by application of dry ice (CO2
snow - cryoslush) or liquid nitrogen. Comedones can be treated by comedone
expression / electrocautery. Cysts can be treated by intralesional
steroids / application of phenol/cryoslush therapy.
Acne vulgaris (pimples) leave behind scars of different types; depressed scars, icepick scars, linear scars, hypertrophic (thick) scars, which need different treatments. Medical treatments such as application of creams containing retinoic acid, glycollic acid, are of help in superficial scars.
Surgical correction of linear and worm like scars can be done by scar revisions such as Z , Y or M
plasty.
Depressed scars can be filled by using fillers such as hyaluronic acid or fat from the patient .
Ice pick and round depressed scars can be corrected by punch elevation/punch transplants.
Hypertrophic scars can be corrected by injection of intralesional steroids, followed by cryosurgery.
Extensive scarring needs more definitive treatment- microdermabrasion, superficial chemical peeling with glycollic acid /trichloracetic acid, cryoslush therapy, dermabrasion and resurfacing with radiourgery or Erbium YAG laser are useful.
All the above treatments are available at the Bangalore skin institute.
