| Microdermabrasion is a simple and safe procedure which involves the use of aluminium oxide crystals to abrade the superficial layers of skin. It is an outpatient procedure under local application of anaesthetic cream and results in improvement of texture of skin , superficial scars and blemishes.It is particularly suitable as a quick measure to improve the appearance of skin and has the advantage of very little aftereffects.Hence it is also referred to as lunch tie cosmetology.
Dermabrasion is a more extensive procedure to abrade the layers of skin using a motor and diamond fraises. It is useful for treatment of scarring of face resulting from acne and chicken pox. It can also be used to remove certain tumours of skin. When done for the entire face , it needs general anaesthesia and is an elaborate procedure lasting 1-2 hours. It is followed by extensive crusting of skin, needing proper whole face dressing, which heel after 2 weeks. The skin bears a raw red look for 2-3 months, which needs care with avoidance of sun. This is followed by growth of fresh rejuvenated skin.
